Year 7

Autumn 1

Digital Literacy and Online Safety (Y7)

A unit of six lessons taken from Common Sense Education’s excellent digital citizenship curriculum, covering a wide range of topics including well-being, privacy and security, online identity, relationships, communication and the media.

Autumn 2

Quiz time with Scratch

A unit that takes the coding a bit further than previous game and animation projects. Investigate lists, variables, broadcasting, number operators and if/else statements to create maths and memory games.

Spring 1

Physical Computing with Raspberry Pi

Build circuits and control LEDs with code. Learn how screens work, what binary code is and how to create animated light shows that combine digital and physical systems.

Spring 2

Real life algorithms

A unit that explores how a number of machine systems in the real world work. How does a pedestrian crossing or car park barrier work? Students create flow diagrams that illustrate the algorithms for these systems, convert this into code and then consider the algorithms for completing everyday tasks like getting up in the morning.

Summer 1

Making the news part 1

This unit is split into two parts. This first part requires students to examine the sources we use for our news, critique what they find online for credibility, and then plan, research and carry out their own investigative report linked to their school or local community.

Summer 2

Making the news part 2

The second part of this unit covers a further six lessons and require the students to work in teams to plan, write and produce a TV news show, delivering a number of segments, including the special report they complete in part one of this project.
