Lesson 5 & 6 - Publish It, Check It
Introduction
Start off by recapping the previous lesson, and asking the children to go back to 2Type and repeat an area they feel they need more practise on. That may be one of the getting started sections, or focusing in on something like using the shift key for capital letters, or trying out another of the longer challenges.
In this lesson we are going to return to 2Publish Plus and choose the Blank template or Blank template - Landscape
Both these options allow you to design your own layout by adding text or image boxes anywhere on the page. You can use this for lots of different purposes, some of which might be available in the other templates, but the point is it gives you complete flexibility and requires you to make more design choices. In this example we will build a non fiction information poster.
Choose your layout
Choose the layout of your choice - landscape or portrait. Discuss the difference with your class and when you might want to use each one, sometimes it matters, other times it doesn’t.
In this template you have a wide range of options of what you can add to your page.
- Text box
- Picture box
- Text and picture box
- Sound
- Post it note
- Shape
- Speech bubble
- Letter art
Adding a border
If you want a border to your poster, drag in the shape tool and choose a rectangle.
Then change the shape fill to white and the border to a colour, thickness and pattern of your choice.
If wanted, you can repeat this with a second colour inside the first.
Text and images
When your border is complete, begin to drag out the text and image boxes you need. Encourage the children to align box edges, match sizes and position them evenly for a neater design.
Titles can then be added and formatted. Remind the children about two hand typing and point out the different formatting options which now just appear at the top of the screen when you click on a text box.
Images can then be drawn using the art tools or imported with clip art or from their computer. You may want to save a selection of images for them to use on the shared area. To add a saved image from your computer click Add image > Choose file > From my PC
Then size as needed with the slider. Click OK when you are happy with the image.
Begin to add text to the main body boxes on your page. Encourage the children to just concentrate on adding the text to begin with.
Continue to add to your page, perhaps adding subheadings. When you have finished, format all the text at the same time. Encourage them to use the same fonts, sizes and colours for each type of text e.g headings, main text etc.
Save your work
When your page is complete save your work.
Plenary
If possible, take a look at some finished examples. Ask the class for some feedback - What features did they add to their page? How have they formatted their work? s it consistent? Could they do anything to improve the work?
Ask the class to think about their own work - Did you use two hands for typing? Did you import an image? Could you format your text? Did you add a border? Did you add any other features?
