Review and refine

Starting from Scratch - Lesson 6

Objectives

  • To create an animation using code.
  • To critically evaluate the work of a classmate and offer constructive feedback.

Introduction

If you did not already do so in the previous lesson, before lesson 6, create an example animation plan as the students did and a short animation to go with it.

In the final lesson, students will complete their animations and then review and reflect on each others' work by completing peer evaluations. The sections on the planning sheet in black writing are for this purpose.

Model doing this with your example project and plan you have created.

Review my project:

  • Does it match my plan?
  • Have I used all the required blocks?
  • If not, which are missing?
  • Can you suggest how I might include a ….?
  • Which new blocks have I used?
  • Can you predict what they might do?
  • What could I still improve?

We've also included an example of a peer evaluation in the lesson slides:

Students should then peer evaluate a partner's work by completing the black section on their partner's planning sheet.

Then give students time to give feedback and explain their evaluations to their partners, especially ideas for how they could still improve the animation.

Plenary

Gather feedback from the class at the end.

  • Whose animation matched their plan?
  • Who added more than was originally included on the plan to improve it?
  • Did anyone have code that was not necessary?
  • Who now feels more confident reading code in Scratch?
  • Who feels more confident writing their own code in Scratch?
  • What would you like to do next in Scratch?
